Millions of
Americans fail to get adequate sleep on a regular basis, or have
difficulty falling or staying asleep. The
negative medical, social, and economic impacts of poor
sleep include fatigue, reduced disease resistance, decreased
memory, lost productivity, and numerous other problems
affecting life in the workplace, at school, and in the home.
Many health
factors may indicate
or contribute to a sleep or sleep-related breathing disorder.
You should consider contacting
your physician
for a
referral
to the Sleep Disorders Center if you consistently experience one
or more of the following conditions:
About the Sleep Disorders Center
The UPMC McKeesport Sleep Disorders Center is staffed by Pennsylvania
state-licensed LPNs and Registered Polysomnography Technicians.
All calls to the center, for both information and scheduling, are
handled by an experienced sleep technician.
The medical
director of the Sleep Disorders Center is Mehboob
Chaudhry, MD, who is board certified in sleep medicine by the
American Board of Sleep Medicine.
Staff are active
in continuing education in order to keep current with the evolving
field of sleep disorder treatment and research. Having your sleep
testing done at a hospital-based sleep center also offers the security
of knowing that trained healthcare professionals are ready and able
to assist with any medical situation that may arise.
Your
Sleep Study
The center has five private sleep rooms, each furnished
with a queen size bed, television, telephone, and a private bathroom
with shower for your convenience. Each room also contains all the
testing equipment necessary to perform your sleep study.
On the day of
your study, you should arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. so you
may become oriented with the center and our staff may prepare any
equipment necessary for your test. The actual testing begins around
11 p.m., and ends the following morning between 7 and 7:30 a.m.
We offer free parking as well as breakfast vouchers for use in the
hospital cafeteria the morning following your test.
Your referring
physician will receive the results of your test within 48 to 72
hours.
